Elite Sydney Hairdresser and media personality, Troy Thompson, whose flamboyant style belies some seriously formidable attributes, is sharper than you could imagine. By the end of 2009, not only had he celebrated 20 years in the hair industry as the driven, no-nonsense and successful Creative director of Troy Thompson Hairdressing and become trainer for brands such as Paul Mitchell, Original and Mineral, but his ability to produce ‘wealthy hair’ looks that scream luxury, got the social set talking.
His trusted reputation, fastidious attitude towards his craft and a tireless ability to please, allowed Thompson to boast one of the most enviable cachets of elite clientele in the whole country.
These connections and an accumulated wealth of knowledge on all things glamorous, rapidly catapulted him into becoming the man with the golden scissors amongst a team of highly respected experts on the Channel Seven makeover series 10 Years Younger In 10 Days.
Capitalising on his debut as one of the breakout talents of the year, soon Thompson also began appearing regularly on Seven’s The Morning Show, channel Nine’s Mornings With Kerri-Anne as well as being interviewed on Nine’s A Current Affair. He even managed to take Sydney radio listeners from drab to fab, in a series of makeovers on MIX106.5 with Sonia & Todd.
Still, this remarkable trajectory concealed a far more serious side to this next-generation hairdresser. He had already made some discerning and insightful choices in his successful career. None more so than honourably becoming part of a notable mentoring programme via the Ted Noffs Foundation, through which he was appointed their first Ambassador.
Thompson felt it was time to give something back, sitting his own childhood in the NSW town of Ballina as inspiration. He himself had the privilege of being mentored early on his career by such luminaries as acclaimed French hairdresser Thierry Friegner and celebrated hair stylist Joh Bailey.
Impressively, Thompson has genuine compassion for today’s youth.
“Sometimes all it takes is for kids to understand that there are people who care about them,” he says.
What’s more, he’s on a mission to inspire the women and men of Australia to be their finest, adding “We all want to look our best as the external representation of ourselves, where we are telling the world we are proud of who we are.”
His masterful diversity reveals that Thompson is indeed, far more than just about hair. While his salon has become a symbol of youthful optimism, Thompson’s feet are firmly on the ground. And after his television appearances, perhaps that’s one of the reasons Australian men and women have already fallen in love with this supremo’s visions. He has been inundated by people all over the nation, wanting the makeover man to work his magic on them.
It’s also because it’s clear he knows every insider tip toward ageless beauty there is, from hair and skincare, to silhouette and smile. And he has an impressive contact list of practitioners to help along the way.
These, as well as his own boundless capacity in 2010, inspired him to push the Troy Thompson brand even further, with the launch in September of his much-anticipated first book, Troy Thompson’s Guide To The Younger You, where all of his beauty secrets were revealed.
Shortly after the book was released Troy was contacted by the Southern Cross Austereo Network to host his own radio show promoting the same concept, looking and feeling younger. A year later, not only has Troy written a second book with the same title as the first, due out in February 2012 filled with tips on how to achieve the younger you but his radio show, To The Younger You With Troy Thompson is going from strength to strength, having just been picked up for another season.
Troy wanted the listeners to learn how to feel good not only on the outside but on the inside too, as he believes this is key to achieving the younger you. So a wide range of topics are always discussed, from Botox treatments to men’s menopause.
While Troy is not on air, he is currently busy with fulfilling his duties as Brand Ambassador of the weight management shake program MyWhey. Troy will be featuring in their new TVC and branding within Woolworths nationally from September 11th 2011. MyWhey General Manager, Stephen Smyth said “Our team is excited by Troy joining as the key ambassador to the MyWhey brand. When we met with Troy we quickly identified that he was passionate about helping people to live younger, longer and healthier lives.”
As an advocate and role-model for people to achieve their goals whether that be weight loss or work related, Troy has recently also been approached by the well-known Sydney Institute Tafe to become an Ambassador for their NSW 120 year celebration. After achieving so much in his own career, Troy happily agreed, eager to inspire the next generation of hairdressers and was proud to be chosen to do a speech at their high achievers awards night.
Troy believes when we look good, we feel good and feeling good is the key to confidence and success in every area of life. This philosophy is also the basis of his latest book, Guide To The Younger You. By Troy Thompson.
Troy Thompson values professional integrity above all else. Combine that with his insightfulness, and it’s obvious that this creative flair and ample star quality is only at the beginning of something much bigger.
